Understanding how it works, your risks and your options is the first step as you make a decision.
What Is the Abortion Pill?
What is referred to as the abortion pill is not a single pill, but a two-step process utilizing several pills. It is FDA-approved for use up to 10 weeks of gestation. The abortion pill uses two drugs. First is Mifepristone, also known by the brand name Mifeprex®.
What is Mifepristone?
Mifepristone, also known by the brand name Mifeprex®, contains a drug that cuts off the supply of blood and nutrients to the developing embryo and ends the life of the embryo.
What is Misoprostol?
Misoprostol, also called Cytotec®. Is the second medication administered in the abortion piill protocol. Misoprostol causes the uterus to contract and expel the embryo.
Does This Feel Like a Period?
Some women say this is stronger than a painful period and can cause a lot of blood loss. Average bleeding lasts 9-16 days.
What are the risks?
An ectopic pregnancy can be life threatening if undetected. This is why having an ultrasound before proceeding is a good health decision. Other risks include excessive bleeding, potential fillers or fake medications if the provider is unknown, and many other potential risks. These are best discussed with a licensed medical professional in person.
What if I Change My Mind?
Abortion Pill Reversal may be possible in some situations. The efficacy is 67% and timing is important. There is no guarantee but using natural hormone therapy, success may be possible.
