How the Abortion Pill Works

The abortion pill is not a single pill — it’s a two-drug process used to end an early pregnancy, typically up to 10 weeks. Understanding how it works is the first step to making a fully informed decision, and it’s information many women never receive completely before being asked to take it.

The process uses two medications:

Mifepristone — the first pill. It blocks progesterone, a hormone the pregnancy needs to continue.
Misoprostol — taken 24 to 48 hours later. It causes the uterus to contract and empty.

Before considering the abortion pill, two things matter medically: confirming how far along you are, and confirming the pregnancy is in the uterus (not ectopic, which is a medical emergency the pill cannot treat). A free ultrasound can confirm both — and you’re entitled to that information first.

If you do not have access to emergency medical care in the two weeks after taking the medications, you should not have a pill abortion. Additionally, even when taken as FDA approved (before 10 weeks), drug-induced abortions have four times the risk of complications as first-trimester surgical abortions. This risk increases rapidly with advancing gestational age.

If I have an IUD should I take the abortion pill?

Misoprostol is a synthetic prostaglandin medication used primarily to prevent stomach ulcers in patients taking NSAIDs, induce labor, and manage early pregnancy loss or abortion.
